Planning Permission

Due to the size and impact of the SunPipe system on the roof scape, it is generally unnecessary to obtain planning permission for a SunPipe installation. In the same way that it is not necessary to obtain planning permission for a flue terminal, or indeed any extract duct termination, planning permission is normally not required.

Indeed, most Planning Officers welcome the Diamond dome SunPipe as a suitable discreet termination and this is particularly favoured by Planning Officers where a SunPipe is used in place of a conventional window or rooflight, which would otherwise be disallowed by a Planning Officer if it is overlooking a neighbouring property. Indeed, many Planning Officers will allow a SunPipe on a 'sensitive' roof slope, where they will not allow a conventional rooflight.

For Conservation areas, however, it is often illegal to make any change to the roof or fabric of the building without seeking the Listed Building Officer's approval and no work should be carried out until such approval has been granted.

Our Conservation SunPipes are particularly favoured by Listed Building Officers in this respect, particularly since they are of steel construction (and not plastic) and in view of the fact that the Conservation Rooflight fits virtually flush with the roof tiling and is similar in design to a Victorian cast iron rooflight. The Square SunPipe is also favoured for similar reasons.

Monodraught will always provide detailed construction drawings or any other information to Planning Officers on request.
