  • Project name: Piran Meadows Resort & Spa, Newquay, Cornwall
  • Project team: Phelan Construction Ltd, NBDA Ltd, Darwin PIM
  • Local Authority Building Control: Plymouth & Cornwall Building Control Partnership

Phelan Construction completed the Piran Meadows Resort and Spa project (£ 4.4 m) in June 2014. The project was nominated for the South West regions "Best Small Commercial Building" in the regional London Authorities Building Control awards and won on a ceremony that took place on 12th June 2015. More than 360 people from across the South West region gathered at the Holiday Inn, Plymouth, to witness the announcement of the winners of the South West LABC regional awards.

The LABC Awards celebrate not only the design of a building, but also other vital elements in the creation of excellent buildings: technical innovation, sustainability and high performance.

At Monodraught we are proud to have contributed to this project with our high performance natural lighting and natural ventilation systems: Sunpipe®, Sola-boost® X-Air and Windcatcher® X-Air.

SUNPIPEs were installed across the following rooms: administration, staff area, office and shop, caravan sales lounge, concourse and changing rooms. SOLA-BOOST X-Airs were installed at the restaurant/bar, entrance-circulation and circulation-bowling and indoor activities. WINDCATCHER X-Airs were installed at the simulator and admin office.

Entrants are assessed by a panel of building professionals who look at building control quality, outstanding features and technical innovation, sustainability, project management, administration and site safety.

For the Small Commercial Building category they also consider the sensitivity to the local environment and how the design supports the commercial purpose of the building.

The winners will now go forward to the LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final, which takes place in London on Tuesday 10th November 2015.

Phelan Construction's Nicholas Koliardos who was the contract manager on the project said:

"After battling against severe weather conditions we were so pleased to complete the project on schedule and to such a high standard. It is very rewarding to receive this recognition from the LABC”.

Richard Rowe, Building Control Group Leader at Cornwall Council, said:

"Cornwall nominations for the LABC Building Excellence Awards are chosen from the many projects completed in Cornwall by Local Authority Building Control surveyors. To be shortlisted for a South West Award is recognition that the project is completed to the highest standard. The South West awards showcase the best quality construction projects in the South West. We work closely with our customers to provide the assistance required to deliver successful projects and then reward the results”.
